Today in class we finished the movies and we had a discussion on the morality of the various characters, i do agree with the opinion that Hamlet is the most virtuous, because he is the most tested, Horatio is very good, but he dosent have a lot of things that challenge his virtuosity because he is never tempted. I think that Hamlet does come from a place of self-righteousness a in the beginning and eventually comes to a place of understanding and that is where he comes to terms to his fate. I really liked the Braunagh version’s ending because it gave a grater sense of fraternity between hamlet and Laertes in their final moments and it gives a bigger sense of crumbling from within when Fortinbras invades.

We watched and read the end of the movie/book today, i cant say that i liked it very much because it reminded me of the end of Monty Python and the Holy Grail where everyone gets arrested at the end. Im a not a fan of movies where the main character(s) die in the end, because it makes it seem like all the progress was for nothing. I do like the whole metaphor with the kingdom falling from within and fortinbras conquered without firing a shot. I did also like the part when Hamlet tells Horatio to go out and tell his story because it adds something like a third dimension and breaks the fourth wall. I liked the moment of dramatic irony when Gertrude is about to take a sip from the cup and then the last intense scene breaks out.

I thought the bedroom scene was really boring because it involved a lot of long speeches and no exciting acting, but i did like the way Laertes acted when he got the news that ophelia was dead, i think he is a good actor. The scene with the two gravediggers is very different as to how i interpreted it ans i think that now i will have to change my interpretation to better suit the scene when i am performing it. I really liked the performance of the second gravedigger in that scene because he fit it perfectly. Reacting to the world after death thing i think that Hamlet is hoping that he wont be forgotten like his father as i would want to be remembered. I think that the world is only shaped by our perception of it, so i think the world does kind of end when we die.

In response to the last question, i think it does get a little fake after a while, but the intensity does really add too the scene, because if it was a lot less emotional then it would be just as fake.
We read a scene involving Hamlet talking to his mom, the same scene as we did yesterday but the Jacobi version. The Jacobi version was kinda cheesy, but i guess what can you expect from a version that is basically for stage. The lines are delivered a lot less forcefully than the Branagh version, and there is a strange part where Hamlet is bouncing up and down on the bed on his mom and i am not too sure if there is any deeper meaning that can be extracted.

Today we watched the confessional scene from the Branagh version of the movie. I realized that all the scenes are a lot more intensely acted that i would think so while im reading the book. I think that the effect acquired by having the king be totally unaware of the presence of hamlet was very effective because it gave a sense almost like as if Hamlet was in a different dimension. The other scene that we watched was the scene when Hamlet tells the Queen that the murder went down and then he murders polonius. When Polonius was hidden behind the curtain an dwhen he fell down he was still covered in it and i felt that that was a good idea on the directors part because then it was still a mystery who it was even when he was on the ground. Hamlet was extremely forceful when he was talking to the queen and got very rough

We compared all the difefferent versions of the play scene in Hamlet. There were many interpretations and i think that my favorite was Braunagh’s Version. The script is very intense and this version shows all the intensity that i feel in the script. The king seems to be very angry in this version and this anger is reflected in the court and they see his agitation in the way that they exit the theartre. In the Mel Gibson version the king seems almost entranced and there is a lot less tension but he is more effective than the Jacabee version where Hamlet is constantly interrupting the play and is laughing like he is insane and the king just exits like nothing is wrong

Today we watched the famous to be or not to be scene and we also read it in the book, i enjoyed how we compared and contrastred the two in class. I liked the Kenneth Brauna version of the to be or not to be scene because it was more outward and more serious, and it seemed like he was more thinking about himself because he wasnt talking to the camera he was looking at himself in the mirror. The other version reminded me of a documentary where the host talks to the camera. In the second scene with the Hamlet talking to ophelia i liked it more in the Kenneth Brauna version when he was searching through all the cupboards frantically and then in the end the king gets away, i think it would have ruined the effect if Hamlet had seen the king in the cupboard.

i changed my blog from LiveJournal to WordPress so here are my first three blogs from LiveJournal

The first thing that i notice is that hamlet is going to be hard to understand because of the complex language that is used. I had the same problem when i was reading Romeo and Juliet and i found that it really helps to read the book aloud in class where we can discuss meanings. One of the first things that puzzled my in this text is the third line, when Francisco says “Nay, Answer me and unfold yourself” and Barnardo says “Long live the king”. This does not seem like a logical response. Hamlet seems like a character who is very tired of life and angry at his mom even though he is so young. I think that the Ghost is a sign of Hamlet getting into power eventually, and death is going to occur to have him acheive that.
My text is a bad text, it excluded two very lengthy passages that were important to the story, it is very annoying. Ophelia seems like a person who is easily persuaded by other people into doing things she may not want to, like in the opening of 1.3 the conversation between Ophelia and Laertes, Laertes tells Ophelia that Hamlet probably does not actually love him, and Ophelia accepts this and does not disagree in any way. When Polonius comes in and gives his two cents on the situation he says very similar things to Laertes, that you shouldnt believe anything a man says in a lustful frame of mind. Ophelia has the same response of acceptance. When Hamlet and Horatio go looking for the Ghost, they have to wait until twelve until they see it appear. When it comes, Hamlet goes into this long speech about how he wants the ghost to answer him and why it is not. Horatio tells him that the ghost wants him to follow it and Hamlet does, and then it speaks. This is a very interesting part of the text, where Hamlet finds out that his father was murdered by his uncle rather than dying naturally.
One of the things that i noticed the most in this passage was when Hamlet was conversing with Horatio and Marcellus, and Hamlet says that time is out of joint and he was born to set it right, it made him look very self-centered, because he assumed the entire world was relying on him to fix all the problems. When Hamlet comes back from talking to the ghost, he seems very excited and as if he has a secret to keep from Horatio and Marecellus, and when he makes them swear not to tell on his sword he acts as if the world is resting on his shoulders.
The first scene, where Polonius tells Reynaldo to go to France and to question Danes living there as to the doings of Laertes and the legitimacy of said actions is actually quite telling as to the actual motives of Polonius to keep a watch on his son. When Polonius tells Reynaldo that hje can make up things about Laertes in order to find out things and to change peoples opinions it makes him seem ruthless. Polonius is a rather dumb character, i am not too sure wheat to think of him because i do not know who exactly he is in the movie, but he thinks he is a grand courtier with all the “art”. He dances around the point without ever making it. Gertrude and Claudius both are skeptical about the actual help that may be gotten from Polonius. Claudius and Gertrude both seem to express grief for the “madness” of hamlet. When Polonius reads the love letter from Hamlet to Ophelia he could have thought of many better methods of getting the same result but he decided the most heartless way.
